What is hoarding?
Hoarding is a complex situation which can affect the use, safety and condition of a home or property. However, not every property with a large amount of belongings is the result of hoarding behaviour. Dealing with hoarding situations requires a gentle, expert touch.
At PureClean Biohazard, we know it’s important to recognise the difference between hoarding behaviour and a hoarded property.
Hoarding behaviour
The personal challenges someone may face, like difficulty managing or letting go of possessions. It may affect a home or living space over time.
Hoarded property
The amount of belongings or accumulated items in a home starts to affect safety for those living there, as well as hygiene, accessibility or being able to use each room for their own purpose.
A hoarded property isn’t always caused by hoarding behaviour. Homes can become difficult to manage for many reasons.
Why hoarding support might be needed
You or someone you care about may benefit from support following:
• Bereavement or the loss of a loved one
• Physical illness, injury or reduced mobility
• Mental health challenges
• A stressful or traumatic life event
• Relationship or family breakdown
• Caring responsibilities
• Social isolation or loneliness
• A gradual build-up of belongings that has become difficult to manage
We understand that every situation is different
Not every home with significant clutter is the result of hoarding behaviour. Sometimes, following bereavement, illness, or stressful life events, everyday tasks can become overwhelming and a property may gradually become difficult to manage.
While these situations may look similar, they are not always the same, and they should never be approached with assumptions or judgement.
At PureClean, we take the time to understand each situation and give practical support to meet your needs.

What we don’t do
Reset Cleans – We won’t clear a hoarded property quickly without consideration for the individual where hoarding behaviour is involved, as this can be distressing.
Our approach focuses on small, manageable steps that prioritise safety, dignity and respect.
We understand that simply removing belongings does not always address the circumstances behind the situation, which is why we work at a pace that feels appropriate for each person.
Our Trauma-informed Approach
We recognise that asking for help can be incredibly difficult. Many people feel embarrassed, anxious or worried about being judged before they even make contact.
Our team works with a trauma-informed approach, recognising that every individual has their own experiences and challenges. We focus on creating a safe, respectful environment where people feel listened to and involved in decisions about their home.
We are specialist cleaners, not therapists or counsellors, and our role is to restore safety, improve hygiene and reduce environmental risks. Emotional support and therapeutic treatment are outside the scope of our service, but we always work with empathy and respect.

We work without judgement, and are committed to delivering a safe, high-quality clean tailored to your individual circumstances.
